Double-sided self-pierce riveting: rivet geometry optimization

Abstract Important developments have been achieved for self-pierce riveting with the utilization of a double-sided tubular rivet that is able to join sheets similar and dissimilar materials different larger thicknesses, while remaining hidden in-between after joining process completed. Nevertheless, performance those joints can still be improved by an optimization parameters, mainly chamfered angle ends ratio between initial height thickness rivet. In this paper, correct parameter combination established obtained joint shear destructive tests, requirements force energy, as well dimension protuberance produced above surface. The influence introduction additional in overall mechanical also discussed. Joints thinner thicker are analysed, extend range applications new forming process.
